David's Story

David Charles Hoskins was a vibrant and active man who enjoyed riding his motorcycle, attending sporting events, and spending time with family and friends. David was diagnosed with pre-diabetes in his early twenties which later developed into type two diabetes. Managing his diabetes was challenging. With a busy social life, David often neglected his blood sugar monitoring and dietary restrictions.

In his early thirties, David began experiencing complications. He had frequent bouts of fatigue, and blurred vision, and underwent his first major surgery caused by a diabetic ulcer. Due to the demands of being a husband, father, and retail manager, medical appointments were not always at the top of his list.

By his late thirties, David faced more severe health issues. He developed neuropathy, which caused pain, and numbness, and experienced swelling in his lower extremities. In February 2023, David was diagnosed with Stage 4 Kidney Failure along with Stage 4 Heart Congestive Failure.

Determined to turn his life around, David tried to manage his diabetes more seriously. He received dialysis three times a week, stayed on top of his doctor's appointments and medication, and was on track to be added to the kidney transplant list. David had changed his mindset so that he could Do What Needed to Be Done for himself and his family.

Unfortunately, years of neglect had taken a toll on his body. Even with his efforts, he struggled with maintaining stable blood sugar levels, and his health continued to decline. By the age of 38, David was dealing with multiple complications from his diabetes. Despite receiving unfavorable news each doctor/hospital visit, David remained hopeful. His faith in God gave him the strength he needed to fight each day.

On May 16, while sleeping David went into cardiac arrest and was on life support until he made his final transition on July 16, 2024. Though he had an ambitious spirit and a desire to live fully, the consequences of poor management became a tragic reality.

Ultimately, David’s story is a poignant reminder of the importance of proper diabetes management. Neglecting early signs of diabetes not only affects your quality of life but can also lead to a series of health complications that shorten your life. That is why the David’s Legacy Diabetes Foundation, is dedicated to spreading awareness and promoting prevention and management for all those who have been impacted by diabetes in any way.
